All bikes need regular preventative maintenance and cleaning to keep them running efficiently and safely.
How often you do this, how frequently you ride and in what weather and surface conditions, will affect how often your bike will require a service. For most people, the service interval varies between six months to a year.
Daily or Heavy Use (Every 3 to 6 Months)
If your bike is your main form of transport, commuting most days and ridden in all weather, then a service every three to six months is sensible.
Daily or Heavy Use puts constant stress on:
chains and gear sprockets
brake pads and cables
gear changing mechanisms (front & rear derailleurs)
bearings
wheel rims and spokes
Regular servicing keeps everything tight, safe and predictable, and dramatically reduces the chance of inconvenient mid-commute problems.
Regular Use (Every 6 to 9 Months)
If you ride once or twice a week, but not every day, a six to nine month service interval usually works well.
Occasional Use (At Least Once a Year)
Even if your bike gets used just occasionally, a service once a year should be the absolute minimum. When bike's are left unused, bearing grease dries out, cables corrode which creates resistance, tyres deflate and crack and bolts seize. An annual service ensures everything is safe, functional and ready for when you decide to ride again.
In summary, a clean and well-maintained bike is a joy to ride and is likely to be ridden more often, leading to increased physical and mental health benefits and a cleaner environment.
